Comparing Digital Camera Performance And Features

May 31, 2009 by Chris Campbell · Leave a Comment

How long will camera manufactures continue to keep cranking out cameras with the same flaws over and over again? Apparently, just a little bit longer. It’s like Canon and others are asleep at the wheel. Buying a Canon PowerShot SX100IS Digital could be a disappointing proposition for many, unless they’re informed of what the camera can and can’t do. So, in the spirit of spreading the word, let’s take a better second look at the SX100IS, and see what’s in store for the perspective purchaser.

The thing with cameras though, is that the technology changes so quickly, that by the time I finish writing this review, the next great batch of great cameras will hit the store shelves. Only too soon to be quickly followed by manufactures announcing the latest and greatest new features for the next round of cameras. If your into photography, and technology, this can be great fun. What with learning all the new jargon, buying all the latest gadgets, and generally just impressing the heck out of friends and family with all your geek wisdom.

And here’s another surprise. Expect a four or five second delay between taking pictures while the SX100IS flash recharges. Just like every other point and shoot out there. I know this doesn’t happen in the SLR camera category, but I also don’t believe I should have to spend $600 plus to get that feature. With the amount of money consumers have spent on digital cameras, the industry really needs to focus their R&D on this problem. Expecting point and shoot camera users to get the perfect picture the first time is unreasonable. Even the pros aren’t that good.

The truth be told, the basis of a good camera really hasn’t changed much in the past 50 years or so. You want a good quality lens, in a solid camera housing, that is capable of getting you a true to life quality image reproduction. The camera manufacturers have been greedily salivating over digital technology ever since it hit the photography field. They’ve never had so many reasons to release so many new models with so many new bells and whistles. Mind you, some of them are great, but some features are just plain useless. Or if not useless, then probably so buried amongst all the other menu features that most users never know they’re there let alone use them.

Every once in a while, you find a camera that seems to be the one for you. In the case of the SX100IS, I found myself somewhat wanting more. Unfortunately, I still have a few more gripes. Image quality, suffers in lighter environments. No viewfinder, which limits users options. LCD screen has no protection, and susceptible to scratching. Scroll wheel is too responsive, and prone to selecting wrong setting.

And, finally for those of you with bottomless pocketbooks, why not splurge and grab yourself a Canon EOS 5D for about $2000 plus change. With full frame technology at a very reasonable price, your bound to silence even the most ardent “film only” purists anywhere.

Digital Cameras, Accessories, And Other Cool Stuff

So, you’ve had your Canon Digital Rebel XT for a while, and you’re starting to get a little camera envy. Nikon, Canon and the competition keep releasing new models with more bells and whistles. Which of course leads you to thinking about how much better your photos could be with the latest technology. Can’t say I blame you, it happens to the best of us. Just for the heck of it, lets take a look at a couple of upgrade possibilities you may want to consider for your Rebel XT. One is the Canon EOS 5D, which is considerably more expensive, but includes a multitude of features the XT doesn’t have. Keeping it in the Canon family, lets also take a look at the Canon EOS 40D. The 40D is pretty much in the middle price wise between the XT and the 5D, but with some pros and cons worth considering.

For the sake of argument, lets assume your a typical Digital Rebel owner, and shoot a wide variety of subjects. Family portraits, sports, landscape, nature, family outings, and vacation pics.

One place to start thinking in your upgrade process, is to ask yourself why you want to upgrade. Is it speed? In which case, the Canon 40D has a faster frame-per-second rating. 6 FPS for the 40D, while the 5D shoots at 3 FPS. How about image quality? The 5D comes with a pretty sweet full frame sensor. Full frame sensor cameras will result in better image quality, wide angle shots, and photographs more suited for cropping during the editing process.

Will you be using your camera for portraits? If you find taking pictures of family members, friends, and so on, very amusing, you are a portrait photographer.

A non brand name camera bag is not such a bad idea as well. While you may be proud of the fact that you own one of the premier brand name cameras, it also makes it a potential target to thieves and other sticky fingered fiends.

Of course, its hard to have a camera upgrade discussion without the subject of price coming up. The Canon 5D is a little less than twice the price of the EOS 40D. You have to wonder if maybe it’s better to go for the cheaper 40D, and dump the rest of your budget into some nice glass (photo geek speak for lenses).

If you enjoy photographer in the night, you are a nighttime photographer. If you are, having good flash and many other features is important. Your camera will greatly differ when compare to cameras used by any of the other types of photographers mentioned so far.

Something that can really help me take better pictures. With that in mind, here’s a list of some nice cases I found. Should help you find what your looking for.

Paper Bags Also Have Advantages

May 31, 2009 by Simon Green · Leave a Comment

In the US and other countries, when someone shops, they are given an option to choose whether they want their newly purchased merchandise to be placed in a plastic bag or a paper bag. Many stores actually stock both and it is not hard for some customers to actually carry out both depending on what they have bought. Plastic bags are easily stealing the limelight because they are attractive and shopping outlets are able to embroid them with different designs and use them for advertising. They are also water-proof which comes in handy when doing grocery shopping because some foods are stored in or around water, eg fruits. But paper bags have been able to hold their forte too and have also retained their popularity over the years.

Paper bags first hit the scene in the 1800s. This was when the modern retail revolution as we know it today was spreading around the West and most of the major retailers that we know today were being born. It was a time when the world was rapidly modernizing and people were shopping in the newly created department and grocery stores. This was a stark contrast to earlier times when most stores were full-service, with someone behind the counter to get you whatever you wanted. The new stores were self-service and customers could walk inside the store from one isle to another and choose from the different rows that were filled with an assortment of goods and foods. Customers usually had access to a shopping basket which could either be carried or pushed. After the customer made their way to the cash register, there the dilemma began. An ordained clergyman, Francis Wolle, who was at the time working in a family-owned store, saw the need to develop a bag where shoppers could bag their purchases. He was later contracted by the Union Paper company to produce a version of the bag for them and there was no looking back. The paper bags that we know today were in existence.

Paper bags have their own inherent advantages. One of the advantages is cost. Almost all indications show that the world is in a global recession and companies are trying everything they can to compete. They are doing this by cutting costs and one of the ways companies can cut costs is in buying paper bags instead of plastic bags.

Another advantage accrued from paper bags is safety. Shoppers who have chilldren are weary of plastic bags because when children get a hold of them and play with them, there is a risk of asphyxiation. This has caused many deaths in the past. With paper bags this risk is greatly minimized because if one plays with a paper bag, the worst that can happen is that it is shredded and contributes to litter.

Paper bags are also stronger now than they used to be. This was as a result of numerous complaints that they were brittle and hence could not contain a reasonable weight of groceries.

Online Education: The Path to Upward Career Mobility

May 30, 2009 by Charles Hodge · Leave a Comment

Of all the achievements you could ever gain, perhaps the most powerfully rewarding is the achievement of a degree. A college or post graduate degree can open career doors, improve income, expand your horizons, and grant you a better future in ways few other things can accomplish. Once such a degree was the prerogative of a privileged few. Now, thanks to online education, more and more people can obtain the benefits of advanced education and can gain online degrees.

The variety of online degrees available is astounding. Whether you are looking for an undergraduate degree in liberal arts, or an advanced degree in business, or a certificate in a particular area of training, online education can give you access to programs and institutions around the world, from world famous universities to small community colleges to programs that are and always have been designed for online education.

Finding the program you want begins with a simple Google for education in your areas of interest. You will quickly find an enormous number of online education providers who will be quick to respond to an email, a call on an 800 line, or the submission of an online application form. Once you are in touch, trained advisors will be quick to reply, helping you find a path to the online degree of your dreams.

While getting an online education is not cheap, there are many ways to finance online degrees — and online education is often cheaper than comparable programs due to the vastly reduced overhead in providing education online rather than at a traditional campus. The usual methods used to finance education are available to online students: loans, grants, scholarships and employer-backed continuing education programs are all available for much online education.

Most adults find online education a perfect choice in terms of scheduling. With the flexibility to allow you to sort your daily class schedule to match your daily obligations, and with no commute or obligatory in-class time, you will find you are free to work on a fluid basis. Taking part in class discussions is much like posting to a social forum. With the ability to turn in homework, papers, and take tests online you will find that getting degrees online is much less demanding of your scheduling genius than it would otherwise be.

An online education can give you possibilities in your life nothing else can offer. Whether you dream of promotions, specialization or a new career path entirely, making use of the choices available to get online degrees is a present you can’t afford not to give yourself. In another time, and another life, you might have been doomed to unchanging, unchallenging rote work, tied behind a plow or swinging an axe for forty years and more. With online degrees available to you, however, you can become anything.

The Perfect Digital Camera Is Here

May 30, 2009 by Chris Campbell · Leave a Comment

Before you think about buying a camera, you should know how to buy a digital camera. You should look at many different cameras in your price range and use a checklist to record the specifications. After you have all the information for different cameras, you can then compare the specifications to narrow down your options.

Asking what your want your camera to do for you and how you plan to use it would be a far better question to consider before starting your digital camera search. Since digitals range in price these days from $100 to around $5000, price is really to vague a consideration to think about in the beginning. For the sake of discussion, though we could break digitals down by price category. This should at least give you a baseline to start from.

For under $200 there are some pretty nice digital cameras that would suit the purposes of the average photographer. Someone in this category is looking to have a good camera to take on vacation, to the cousins wedding, and to catch junior blowing out the birthday candles. The Canon PowerShot A570IS is a good choice here.

Going for under $150, it comes with some advanced features like face recognition and image stabilization. For $20 or $30 dollars more, you could get the more compact Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph. Less image quality, but substantially smaller and portable.

Anything in the $200 to $500 price range will get you much the same camera as the previously mentioned cameras, with a few improved features. Typically higher resolution LCD screens, better lenses, higher zoom factors, more manual control, and overall better image quality. Don’t worry about megapixels, as the image quality of any camera over 5MP will be all but indistinguishable to the average photographer.

In the $500 to $1000 your looking at a cornucopia of entry digital level digital SLR cameras. Models like the Canon XTi Digital Rebel, and the Nikon D40 are good examples.

These cameras are capable of taking some truly amazing photos. Plenty of manual control tweaking for the semi serious professional further enhance your picture taking options here. Don’t forget to leave money in the budget for different lens choices as well.

Good camera prices, and good digital cameras, don’t always find themselves on the same shelf. There are however deals out there for the savvy consumer, who knows where to look, and when to buy.
